Ensure a moving container is allowed in your neighborhood

Depending on where you live, you may have to check with your homeowners association before deciding to place a container on your property. There may be HOA regulations concerning portable containers so it is always a good idea to check first to see if on-site storage is allowed in your neighborhood. If you are going to be placing the container on the street, you will most certainly want to refer to your local zoning laws. Rules and regulations will vary by city so it is best to reach out to your local municipality.

Choose delivery area

When you are ready to start planning your container delivery, one of the first things you’ll want to do is decide where this container will be placed on your property. There are some important factors to consider when making this selection. You’ll want to ensure that the container is placed on a hard, flat surface. Shipping containers can weigh anywhere from 20,000 – 60,000 pounds, causing them to sink into softer, unprepared ground. Should you need to place a container on softer ground (dirt or grass), it is important to have the ground packed prior to drop off. If the container settles into soft ground, you will find it quite difficult to open the doors.

Give the container adequate space

Before you schedule the delivery of your new shipping container, do ensure that there is an appropriate amount of space surrounding the container itself. This will give the delivery driver enough space to make turns to get in, around and out of the property and make the loading process much easier. An ideal amount of space between the container and other objects or obstructions is 15-20 feet.

Limit obstructions near container

Similarly, it is important to make sure that there are no obstructions around the container that could make it challenging for delivery drivers to pickup/deliver the container. For example, you will want to ensure that things like power and telephone lines are well out of the way, as many trucks will tilt up to 16’ when picking up/dropping the moving container.

Check the work

Once the delivery of the container is complete, be sure to check its security and integrity. Open and close the door, making sure it seals properly. Ensure the lock functions properly and if you have any questions or concerns regarding the container, be sure to call the company that delivered it.
