On July 7, 2023, Get Simple Box celebrated a milestone like no other—marking 25 years of serving our community, providing simple storage solutions, and giving back to those in need. From humble beginnings to a multi-state operation, this journey has been about far more than just business. It’s about people, purpose, and making a meaningful impact.

From a Senior Project to a Growing Business

It all began back in 1997 when Ross Black, a senior at Lynden High School, launched what was originally his senior project. With determination, a bit of sacrifice and much support from his dad, Dave Black, Get Simple Box was born. What started as a small mini-storage warehouse quickly evolved into a thriving business, largely due to the introduction of the Simple Box container concept. Today, Get Simple Box operates across seven locations in the Western U.S., offering shipping containers for moving, storage, and modification.

The journey has been anything but ordinary. As co-founder Dave Black likes to joke, “We’re still trying to help Ross complete his senior class project!” What started as a small idea has turned into a thriving business that continues to grow and evolve.

Celebrating Community and Charitable Giving

To commemorate their 25th anniversary, Get Simple Box hosted an open house event in Lynden, Washington, inviting customers, team members, and local partners to celebrate this remarkable milestone. It was more than just a party—it was a chance to express  gratitude for the support they’ve received over the years and to give back to those in need.

As part of the celebration, Get Simple Box was honored to donate $10,000 to four incredible nonprofits that have been close to their hearts. Each organization received $2,500 to support their ongoing work:

Storage is More Than Just Space

Over the years,  Get Simple Box has come to realize that storage is almost always tied to a major life event. Whether it’s moving to a new home, renovating a space, recovering from a disaster, or expanding a business, their customers are often dealing with big, life-changing moments. That’s why they’ve always aimed to simplify the storage process, allowing their customers to focus on what truly matters during stressful and exciting times.

“From the beginning, our mission was never just about offering storage space. It was about serving people during times of change. The more we grew, the more we realized that our business could be about more than just success—it could be about significance, “ said founder Ross Black.

After reading Luke 12:15, Ross’s perspective shifted, and he began focusing not on accumulating wealth but on using what we’ve built to bring hope and help to others. This change in focus led Get Simple Box to support causes like orphan care, addiction recovery, and supporting veteran heroes.

Growing Into a Multi-State Company

Their path to growth hasn’t always been easy. With just a handful of storage containers and less than $20,000 in startup funds, Get Simple Box faced some challenges. But through grit, innovation, a focus on customer service and a whole lot of grace, Get Simple Box has expanded to offer:

And that’s not all— Get Simple Box has plans to expand further through franchising, with plans to bring Get Simple Box to all 50 states in the coming years. The goal is not just to grow for growth’s sake, but to continue multiplying their impact through serving more customers, creating more jobs, and contributing more generously than ever before.

Leadership and Legacy: A Team Effort

Reflecting on the past 25 years, Get Simple Box remains incredibly grateful. They know they wouldn’t be here without the customers who trusted them with their storage needs, the team members who have grown alongside them, and the mentors and partners who’ve helped guide them through the ups and downs.

“We didn’t want this to be just a company anniversary—we wanted it to be a time to say thank you to our team, our customers, and our community,” said founder Ross Black. “If the past 25 years taught me anything, it’s that this business is not about us. It’s about people and purpose.”
