How it all began
Meet Ross Black and his dad, Dave. Ross worked as a dishwasher for the 4 years leading up to his 16th birthday in order to buy his dream car (a 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback) and the father-son team fixed it up together.
Two years later, Ross learned that in order to graduate from high school he would need to complete a Senior Class Project. Dave encouraged him to do something more significant than a simple book report or science experiment.
So… Ross decided to sell his dream car and used the proceeds to start the business (a small mini-storage warehouse).
After a few years of successful operation, it came time to expand and the Simple Box container concept was born.

We do not recommend railroad ties as they are often uneven and we’ve seen a lot of people injure themselves trying to drag them around. Containers are made to carry all of the weight at the corners, so all you need is a block under the corner (the drivers carry some dunnage on the trucks).

We can deliver to most addresses in Washington State, Oregon State, and Arizona State. We can also move customers loaded to other states.
Sometimes for a delivery that is further away from one of our locations, it is more cost-effective for a customer to buy the Box so that they are not paying a round-trip fee to have us come pick up the Box when they are all done.

Our drivers are amazing, but there are some times when a site just isn’t suitable, or a customer changes their mind.
If a customer’s ideal delivery location is not suitable, the driver will do all that they can to place the Box in an alternate nearby location.
We budget for up to 30 minutes at customer site to load or unload, and secure the container. Any additional standby or transport time will be billed at $100 per hour.
Any towing or repair bills resulting from insufficient site conditions will be sent straight through to the customer or delivery contact.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR CONTAINER DELIVERY
- FIRM GROUND
The ground must be flat and firm. If your preferred location is on soft ground or is slightly sloped, we recommend bringing in gravel or using lumber blocks to help make the space more container friendly. - OVERHEAD CLEARANCE
Make sure that there are no low-hanging wires, branches, or anything that might get in the way of delivery. We require at least 15′ of clearance for our trucks to deliver containers. - ROOM TO BACK IN AND PULL FORWARD
There must be room for the truck to safely pull in off the road, back into place, and then pull forward.
A 20ft container requires 70ft of space for the truck, and a 40ft container requires 140ft of space for the truck. - PERMISSION TO DELIVER
Try to plan for delivery on private property. We sometimes place shipping containers on city streets in front of your home, but we’ll only recommend this option for a short period of time. We prefer to place them on private property to avoid any potential issues. If we do place your shipping container on a city street or other public place, it is always the customer’s responsibility to obtain proper permits

Even though shipping containers are uniformly designed to accommodate easy storage and transport, there are quite a few different storage container types for specialized distribution.
Standard Dry Container
This is probably what you think of when you think about storage containers. It’s also what we here at Simple Box typically work with. The dry storage container consists of a door on one end—usually either a cargo or roll-up door—and it comes in 8ft wide by 10ft, 20ft, and 40ft long varieties. High Cubes are also available, which mean they are one foot taller at 9.5ft rather than 8.5ft.
Open Side & Double Door Container
These containers have large doors opening to the side rather than the end. There are 20-foot Open Side and 40-foot Open Side containers which are optimal for unloading large pieces of cargo.
Refrigerated Container
A reefer container has the capability to control interior temperature. These are used to transport food items and other goods that need to be kept chilled. Similar to refrigerated containers, insulated containers are important for climate control within the container. Malcolm McLean was a business owner who ran a successful trucking transport service in the 1930s. In those days, goods were shipped in crates of all shapes and sizes – meaning that dock workers loaded ships and trucks in a Tetris-like manner. Each load was unique, and it caused great delays in the loading process; loading and unloading a ship could take days.
McLean knew there must be a more streamlined way to transfer cargo from the ships to his truck so that he could deliver goods to his customers in a more timely manner.
Thus, the shipping container was born.
Shipping containers were uniform in size and designed to stack on each other. Additionally, they could fit perfectly on a standard truck bed, which meant that they could be unloaded from the ship directly onto the truck without first being held in a storage facility.
McLean’s invention completely transformed the shipping industry. Safety standards rose. Shipping times shrank. And within 20 years of the inception of the shipping container, it became an industry standard.
How are shipping containers made?
Shipping containers are designed to withstand some of the worst weather the Earth sees. Since they must survive multiple trips across the ocean, they need to be able to defy pounding saltwater, heavy rains, insatiable winds, and the harsh sun.
The outside of the cargo container is made of solid steel. In production, each steel wall is made in one piece, limiting the number of seams that need to be sealed. The corrugated shape of the walls is designed for optimal strength.
Once the walls, roof, and floor are completely welded together—including square piping around the seams—a wood floor is installed. With everything assembled, the workers paint the container and install protective piping to further weatherproof the shipping container.
In the end, every shipping container will undergo an extensive test to make sure that the container is watertight and will survive many harsh journeys.
How do Shipping Lines work?

The items are packed into the shipping container from the shipper (usually directly at the factory or wherever the goods are produced). The container will be locked and secured and won’t be opened until it reaches its destination (unless it’s flagged for search by customs).

The shipping container will be transported to the nearest port via truck.

Once proper customs documentation is confirmed, it will be loaded onto a ship for transport overseas.

Upon arrival, the shipping container is unloaded and examined by customs.

How much Site Prep is needed for Delivering a Container?

- LOCATION The great thing about a Container is that they can be delivered practically anywhere. We deliver to Businesses and Job sites in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Because transportation cost is the main factor that affects the price difference from one region to the next, you can expect the cost to Rent or Buy to be 10-20% lower the nearer you are to a major port city. Final delivery costs vary from city to city, but usually end up being $2-3 per mile.
- SIZE & TYPE Conex come in standard dimensions that are 8 feet wide and either 10′, 20′, or 40′ long. See our Container Dimensions chart for reference. The more common and available the container size/type, the lower the price will be. Due to global supply chain fluctuations, some years used 40' containers are the cheapest of all, and other years (like in 2021) they are more expensive.
- CONDITION & AGE Most new containers have only made one trip across the ocean. As such, they are generally in much better cosmetic condition and more valuable. Most used containers have are 12 or more years old (sometimes 30 or more years old) and have made many voyages across the ocean and on trucks and trains. As such, they are generally less expensive (often 20-40% less than a brand new container).
