Several years ago, I went to a training session in the middle of winter. It had been a really tough six months for my business, and I felt like I was always taking one step forward and two steps back. I was feeling pretty down and frustrated. During the first break, I met someone whose energy and cheerfulness were really catching. She kept talking about how great things were going for her business and her life. I got curious—what was her secret? Had she read a helpful book, hired someone new, or discovered an amazing new tool or software?

Her answer was just two words: Thankful Thursday.

I remember asking, “Thankful Thursday?” She nodded, smiling, and said, “Oh yeah, it completely revolutionized things for us.”

She went on to explain. It’s simple, really. Every Thursday morning, just set a calendar reminder. When it pops up, think of one person in your life you’re thankful for. It could be anyone—someone at home, a coworker, even your mail carrier. Then, here’s the key: go out of your way to thank them. You cannot stay silent about it.

Ever thanked your garbage man out of the blue? What about an old customer you haven’t seen in months? Or a teacher from high school who made an impact 20 years ago?

In today’s world, gratitude is often overlooked. Why? Many of us fall into the trap of believing we’re entitled to more than we have—whether it’s recognition, success, or material things. This mindset can lead to frustration and dissatisfaction, making it hard to appreciate the good in our lives. In my own experience, I’ve seen how easy it is to fall into this mindset during networking events or conferences, where discussions about success often pivot to frustrations over what we don’t have—better employees, more funding, or fewer regulations.

Yet, Craig Groeschel wisely points out, “Everyone gets better when the leader gets better.” In my case, that also means that everyone gets better when the Leader gets better at being grateful. 

At Get Simple Box, adopting a gratitude in business leadership approach has encouraged us to appreciate what we have, rather than complaining about what we don’t. It sounds crazy to say, but practicing Thankful Thursday, has actually improved our business and the way we connect with everyone around us – customers, vendors, co-workers, and even competitors!

Bringing Gratitude to the Workplace: Our Journey with Thankful Thursday

We started Thankful Thursday at Get Simple Box to bring a little more gratitude into our days. It was my idea, but soon everyone loved it. Now, every Thursday, we take time to think about the people who help us and make our jobs better. This simple thing has made a big difference.

“There’s always something to be grateful for,” I often remind the team. Sharing these good things has made me a better leader and set a good example. It’s changed our whole work atmosphere.

We also start our big yearly planning meetings with gratitude. We look back at the past year and write down all the good things that happened. This isn’t just about feeling good; it helps us bond and get ready to tackle the new year together.

Gratitude has made our workplace better. We face challenges with more positivity and support each other more. Everyone feels important, and that makes us all want to do our best.
