The History of Cargo Containers

Cargo Container History

Did you know that the containerization of cargo has been around since the 18th century?

Originally it was an effective way for coal to be transported (via wagons and canal boats) in England.

By the 1830’s wooden cargo containers were being used to ship products by rail on several continents.

Containers became a preferred mode of transportation because they could easily be transferred from one mode of transport to another – including horse drawn carts, rail, trucks or boats.

In the early 1900’s American shipping companies began moving loaded containers from trains to sea vessels.   At that time the shipping container industry became a tool for transporting products on a regional level.

A major breakthrough happened in the shipping industry in 1955 when designers engineered metal shipping containers that were standard in size.

The new containers could be efficiently loaded, stacked and safely secured for longer sea journeys – this invention led to the global use of modern day cargo containers or Intermodal Shipping Containers as we know them now.

Today we see shipping containers used for a variety of purposes.

Of course they are still heavily used to move cargo and products around the globe, but the steel storage containers are also used as personal storage units and as a way to efficiently move household items from one home to another.

Beyond shipping and storage uses, cargo containers are being modified and transformed into job-site offices for construction companies, emergency medical clinics, cabins, and even multi-story homes.  The possibilities are endless!

Shipping containers have come a long way and their potential in the future is limitless. At Simple Box Storage we talk with people every day who have new, creative ideas for shipping containers.  Let your imagination run wild…

just think of what could you do with a 20′ or 40’ shipping container of your own!
